The Alvarez family

Our Story

Nearly twenty-five years, five brothers, and one recipe that outgrew its own name.

The Alvarez family gathered at the entrance of El Jalisco #3

Jalisco and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato

Where the food comes from

Jalisco and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. That is why the menu has carnitas rancheras cooked Jalisco style, and why the front of the printed menu carries the Parroquia de San Miguel de Allende. There are no secrets to it: fresh ingredients, cooked the way they were cooked at home.

How it happened

  1. 1999

    My Little Mexican Cafe

The first kitchen — Roland Avenue and Clark Avenue, on the southeast side of San Antonio. It ran for nearly three years.

  2. 2001

    El Jalisco #1 opens

Salvador, Rafael and Mario open the first El Jalisco in August. Manuel joins in 2004, Alberto in 2006.

  3. 2008

    El Jalisco #2, Schertz

May 2008 — minutes from Randolph Air Force Base.

  4. 2018

Spring Branch — and the first full bar

March 2018. The first location to serve alcohol, led by Mario Alvarez. Mario bought the property, designed it and rebuilt it himself, keeping the original name.
